Rare Diseases

APS Pharmacy is able to compound medications for rare or orphan diseases. These medications were abandoned by a manufacturer due to little finanical incentives or to small a population..

An orphan drug is a drug designed to treat a rare condition. The 1983 law granted companies the right to sell drugs, once approved, treating a disorder affecting fewer than 200,000 people in the United States without manufacturer competition. Designed to encourage research and investments into treatments for less-common diseases, the number of drugs made to specifically treat “orphan diseases” did increase dramatically. The temporary monopoly provides incentives to create drugs to treat a wide variety of diseases.
