HIV/AIDS

Aging

Researchers know that HIV and age make for a complicated balancing act—a convoluted interplay of the disease itself, natural aging symptoms and the side effects of antiretroviral medication that may enhance those symptoms. Part of the aging process is already about a loss of immunity. APS Pharmacy can assist HIV Aging patients with hormone replacement therapy for men, and women

Wasting

Even though anti-HIV therapies have helped reduce the risk of weight loss and wasting syndrome, both problems still occur. APS Pharmacy is currently compounding Nandrolone Injections for HIV wasting patients.

Erectile Dysfunction

While sexual dysfunction can be a problem for anyone, people living with HIV may be particularly affected. Loss of sexual drive or desire (libido) or the inability to obtain and sustain an erection can have a significant impact on quality of life and feelings of self-worth, and may even contribute to emotional problems including anxiety and depression. Neuropathy

It is estimated that nearly one-third of people with HIV/AIDS experience some peripheral nerve damage. While neuropathy is very common in patients with advanced HIV/AIDS, certain forms of neuropathy like Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) may affect patients in the earlier stages of the disease. For patients with HIV/AIDS, peripheral neuropathy can by caused by the virus itself, by certain drugs used in the treatment of HIV/AIDS or other complications, or as a result of opportunistic infections (e.g., cytomegalovirus [CMV], hepatitis C virus, varicella zoster virus (VZV), syphilis and tuberculosis). Neuropathy could also result from other associated causes, such as autoimmunity, heavy ethanol consumption and vitamin deficiencies (i.e. B12, B1, B6). APS Pharmacy can assist HIV patients with neuropathy through the use of various creams and gels.

Amino Supplementation

The role of antioxidants in preventing apoptosis and viral activation in HIV is well documented. N-acetylcysteine, glutathione, and alpha-lipoic acid have been shown to interrupt the process of viral activation and CD4 cell death. L-glutamine has been shown to improve glutathione levels and significantly increase lean body mass in HIV infection. The literature on the use of L-carnitine and acetyl-L-carnitine in treating mitochondrial toxicity, both in muscle and nerve pathologies is relevant in nutritional treatment of HIV, given the mitochondrial toxicity of nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitor therapy
